UNIC at the EDCF Global Cinema Seminar at IBC Amsterdam

The EDCF Global Cinema Seminar, held during the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) on 13 September at RAI in Amsterdam, provided a comprehensive look at the state of cinema technology and its future direction. Presentations covered topics ranging from 70mm projection, to AI in film production and standards for live events.

The seminar opened with a welcome speech from Cathy Huis in 't Veld-Esser, President of EDCF, announcing the organisation’s upcoming events, namely the annual EDCF conference in 2027, which will be held in Prague on 2-3 March.

Patrick Von Sychowski, EDCF Vice President, shared a presentation on the state of cinema technology, focusing on new premium certifications, the recent success of PLF screens, an update laser transition and the hype around 70MM projection, which made the projection booth an attractive marketing asset.

Sonia Ragone from UNIC shared an update on the current priorities of the UNIC Technology Group and gave an overview on EU legislation impacting cinema operations and technology.

Cathy Huis in 't Veld-Esser (EDCF and Gofilex) and Weronika Kolodziej (Deluxe) presented the new standard and cinema operators’ guidelines for live events produced by EDCF.  John Hurst (Cinecert) shared key updates from ISDCF in the US;  Martin Putto (KINO Rotterdam) told his experience as a projectionist working with 35mm and 70mm. Then two presentations on AI in production and content creation followed, involving Tomasz Witkowski (Underground Slate and Soho Media Club), Richard Welsh (SMPTE and Volustor) and Cédric Lejeune (Holli). Lou Bourkard presented EYE Filmmuseum’s archive and restauration work, while Radoslav Markov (Rainbow Gamut) spoke about next-generation colour modelling. The full programme is accessible here.

Congratulations to EDCF for another successful event!
