What I truly like is the communion with the audience, the emotional connection in a comfortable room!

For the 21st edition of Big Screen Feature - providing a behind-the-scenes look at the world of cinema exhibition through the eyes of professionals themselves - Nathalie Cieutat, Director of Programming at Les Cinémas Pathé Gaumont, discusses the job itself and the value of the Big Screen.

Describe your typical day at work

Programming is very much of a very routine job, even if the films are never the same. Monday is our day of programming, starting at 6:45, Tuesday is for competition analysis, distributors negotiation and film screenings, Wednesday for analysing the opening week box office data and some more screenings, and finally on Thursday and Friday we set up the Monday programming, getting everything ready beforehand.

The moment you fell in love with the Big Screen?

I realized the true power of the movie theater when the Lion King's trailer was constantly playing when I went to the movies, and I was there all the time with my dad who was a journalist and a film teacher.

The bigness of the screen, the immersive sound and the egregore felt in the screening room have always been part of my life.

The best thing about the cinema experience?

For me, what I truly like is the communion with the audience, the emotional connection in a comfortable room...well, without missing out the subtitles, because of people sitting in front of you! Things that a Dolby vision room can prevent!

Before I did programming, I used to love being seduced by the film’s marketing and choosing my next movie. Today I have to watch almost everything so I leave the “being seduced “ part to the audience!
