UNIC at the 2026 Conference of the Association of Czech Cinema Operators

On 3 March 2026, industry experts and cinema managers gathered in Brno for the General Assembly of the Association of Cinema Operators (APK), a full-day event dedicated to discussing innovation, European collaboration, and the future of cinema exhibition.

The morning programme focused on innovation in cinema operations. Participants took part in interactive round-table discussions exploring practical topics such as the use of AI in day-to-day cinema work and strategies for engaging young audiences and schools, reflecting the growing importance of film education. Later sessions highlighted inclusive cinema practices, with representatives from Kino Úsmev in Košice presenting how they make their venue accessible to diverse audiences. This was followed by a presentation from Spielfabrique, which demonstrated how cinemas could integrate video games and gaming events into their programming to reach new audiences.

In the afternoon, Laura Houlgatte, UNIC CEO presented an overview, highlighting the challenges and opportunities facing the exhibition exhibition sector.

Additional sessions showcased innovative business models and industry support mechanisms. The Cineville subscription model, which provides unlimited cinema access in the Netherlands and several other European countries, was presented as a case study. Representatives from Europa Cinemas outlined the opportunities the network offers, while Kantar presented new research on audience viewing habits and the evolving expectations of today’s viewers across theatrical and digital platforms.

The final part of the programme turned to practical developments affecting cinemas, including a discussion on the transformation of the Czech Film Fund into the Czech Audiovisual Fund and what this change meant for cinema operators. The day concluded with the first meeting of a Workflow working group, designed as a platform for cinema professionals to exchange operational experiences and collaborate on common challenges.

Beyond the formal programme, the event also offered opportunities for networking and informal discussions among industry colleagues, culminating in a dinner and social gathering for participants. Huge congratulations to colleagues at APK for a great event!
